Converting a former stable or barn can be harder than building from scratch. Planners often insist that the footprint of the original building is adhered to, which can make the resulting home pokey or awkward; many an L-shaped or U-shaped steading ends up as a warren of interconnecting rooms that don't really flow as a home.
