Summary
Beyonce Knowles's first solo album may have boasted one of the most instantly memorable, exhilarating pop singles of recent times, Crazy in Love, but elsewhere, as is depressingly common with debut albums that have silly amounts of money riding on them, it seemed to have been assembled by committee, ticking musical styles off a list.
The songs on B'Day sit together far more comfortably (is it juvenile to snigger at that title? Yes it is, it refers to her birthday, not her hygiene regime, so there will be no vulgar jokes in this review. Move along). The album still has a ludicrously long list of credits - six different production teams - but was, apparently, made in only three weeks, while she was on holiday, without the knowledge of her record label. While that's a little difficult to believe - is the famously focused Knowles really that spontaneous, or are we just meant to think she is? - it sounds as if it was a lot of fun to make.See the full content of this document
