TEACHER numbers have increasingly become an area of contention in recent years.

In their election manifesto the SNP vowed to maintain teacher numbers. By keeping them at 2007 levels, in the face of falling pupil numbers caused by a dip in Scotland's birth rate, the SNP said this would allow class sizes in primaries one to three to be reduced to 18.
