LIBERAL Democrat scandals are like buses, and badly driven ones at that. The last two fatally ran down Charles Kennedy and Mark Oaten. Now a third has careered headlong into Simon Hughes.

Will he survive the impact? He has some grounds for optimism. For some Lib Dems, Mr Hughes's treatment at the hands of the tabloid press may well win him some sympathy. This is, after all, a party that prides itself on its tolerance.
