'TWAS the week before Christmas and all through the house - well, actually, the place has turned into a madhouse and I don't know whether I'm coming or going. On Monday I was awakened before dawn by a noise that sounded like pennies scraping on stone. Stumbling into the kitchen, softly lit by the yellow glow of the streetlamp streaming in around the blind, I thought I caught a glimpse of my homebot, Ganymede, replacing the telephone in its cradle. He had on a T-shirt I've never seen before bearing the slogan: "A robot needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle." When he left to run my bath I hit the redial button. Why on earth was he phoning a lawyer? At 6:30am? I never programmed that into his software.
Tuesday, Ganymede came to me demanding housing. I reminded him he had a perfectly adequate home and waved in the direction of the walk- in cupboard. "Out of the closets and into the streets!" he bellowed, and from behind the door I could hear my self-guided vacuum cleaner chiming in. When confronted, the little devil clammed right up, but not before I glimpsed that dust bunny at the base of its hose. I retrieved a box and threw it down in front of Ganymede. "There!
