UNTIL now, 3D has had very little part to play in business IT. Perhaps because business has been based for so long around paper documents, and then, at the start of computing, around character- based screens, there has been very little exploration of 3D metaphors for business processes.

As a consequence, business demand for powerful graphics card add- ons to PCs has been restricted to either computer-assisted design work or to image and video processing. However, as Adam Foat, communications manager at graphics card manufacturer Nvidia, explains, Microsoft's new operating system, Vista, is likely to change all of that.
