THE use of condoms by AIDS patients to help prevent them infecting their spouses is "common sense", the leader of Scotland's largest Catholic congregation has told The Scotsman.

Mario Conti, the Archbishop of Glasgow, signalled his support for a change in Church doctrine to lift the ban on condoms for married couples where one partner had AIDS. But he added that such a position should not be mistaken for support for contraception.
