GOVERNMENT plans to scrap rate relief on empty commercial properties could force landlords to consider "constructive vandalism" and "ways to get round the legislation".

Ken McCormack, head of business rates at property agency James Barr, said the scrapping of rates relief would have "serious" consequences for property developers and investors. He claimed that the extra charges on property owners would be the "nail in the coffin" for Maxim, a massive office park on the M8 that has been largely empty since it was built on a speculative basis in 2007.
