THE first by-elections of Gordon Brown's premiership could today help determine whether the Prime Minister takes a risk by calling an early general election.

Labour is defending two seats today. Voters in Ealing Southall in London and Sedgefield in County Durham are both electing new MPs, replacing the late Piara Khabra and former prime minister Tony Blair, who is leaving the Commons.
