HOMEOWNERS who pay off their mortgage or switch to a different lender face fees which have trebled in five years, despite a clampdown by regulators.

Research shows some building societies and banks have increased mortgage exit fees from less than GBP 100 in 2002 to nearly GBP 300 in 2007, when experts say the real fee should be no more than GBP 30.
