FROM ABOVE, A CITY looks like a soulless sprawling maze - blocks of concrete buildings dissected by long snaking roads. But on street level, when you see that these stone boxes have windows and doors behind which citizens live, you realise that the concrete blocks are homes buzzing with life.

It is this minutiae of urban living which photographer Gilles de Chabaneix and author Stafford Cliff have tried to explore in their forthcoming book The Way We Live in the City. Fascinated by the idea of the metropolis and the private spaces that exist within it, they have decided to tell the story of urban living by venturing into kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms.
