Bennett Stresses No 10s Must Play with Freedom Welsh Legend and Former Scottish Greats Debate the Stand-Off Issue

PHIL Godman will stride out into his familiar Murrayfield home this afternoon hoping to make Scotland's No 10 jersey his own. One interested observer will be Phil Bennett, one of Wales' most talented stand-offs in a roll call which features many of world rugby's greatest No 10s.

While the young Edinburgh player makes his first Six Nations start, Bennett can look back on a magnificent career which saw him make his Wales debut in 1969 as a 20-year-old. He first wore the red jersey at centre and full-back before succeeding the great Barry John in 1972 at a time when Wales was known as the 'outside half factory'. His famous 50-yard try in Pretoria was a highlight of the 'invincible' British Lions tour of 1974 and he was a catalyst - courtesy of his mesmeric trademark sidesteps - in arguably the greatest try of all time when Gareth Edwards eventually touched down for the Barbarians against the All Blacks at the Arms Park.

Bennett found travelling to Scotland depressingly limiting yesterday, struggling to get a flight north until late last night due to snow, but the promise of Godman playing a freer style was an attractive prospect for the youngster's more illustrious namesake.
