Comedy, Ross Noble Palace Theatre, Kilmarnock, 23 August, and on tour until 9 September

A GEEK DOWN TO THE TIPS OF HIS LONG black hair, Ross Noble is describing his latest acquisition. He's mumbling, so I don't catch its name, but it sounds like the love child of a telly and an MP3 player. I do catch his admission that the first show he recorded was Diagnosis Murder and giggle until I realise he's not joking. He says he's on tenterhooks awaiting the DVD release of the last series of West Wing. Does he think Americans produce better telly, then? His answer deeply gratifies this expat Yank. "Absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt. They also make some of the shittiest television in the world, don't get me wrong, but the beauty of it is when it hits the UK or Australia [where he lives half the year] it's been filtered. All you have to do is find out what's won all the Emmy awards and go out and buy the DVDs. In this country there are certain things, like with the BBC and Channel 4, which can take more risks, but now with channels like Showtime and HBO and FX, which are subscription only, it's getting to the point where America's catching up with innovative, cutting-edge stuff. God bless America, I say."
