SO, FORTRESS Europe's gate rem-ains firmly shut. Two years after the European Union formally took in ten new members from the east, France, Germany, Italy and Austria are still declining to allow the new European citizens the full freedom of movement and employment that is supposed to be one of the cornerstones of the common market.

Apparently, extending to Slavs the same economic rights that those countries already extend to one another's citizens would provoke an "unsustainable" flow of Poles, Hungarians, Czechs and others, wreaking untold economic harm.
