THE older he gets (it's a bit of a shock to realise that he's 80 now), the more it becomes clear that Tony Benn is a great British national treasure. And though he's more of a tea man himself, yesterday's appearance at the Book Festival was as sparkling as vintage champagne.
Scotland is, he revealed, the land of his ancestors. His grandfather, a steeplejack, was a member of the Irvine Brethren, a sect so severe ("Daniel, you've had enough pleasure for one day - the Gordon Brown attitude to budgets") that he rebelled into atheism.
