A DEFIANT Gordon Brown yesterday pledged he would not be deflected from his task, despite rumblings over his leadership after Labour lost its first by- election to the Conservatives for nearly 30 years.

Mr Brown ignored calls for him to step down after a hammering at the by-election in Crewe and Nantwich prompted David Cameron, the Tory leader, to declare "the death of New Labour".
