THE government escaped a major Budget crisis last night when a rebellion over the scrapping of the 10p income tax rate was defeated.

With ministers warning the government would be unable to collect taxes for a month, MPs voted down an attempt to delay the Budget until all the 10p tax losers were fully compensated.
