MUSIC HIS- tory is littered with bands who made classic debuts but fell at the "difficult second album" hurdle. Television's reputation is founded entirely on their magnificent debut, Marquee Moon. The Stone Roses took five years to produce a dog's dinner of a follow-up to their sparkling eponymous debut. Most recently, the Strokes offered a pale imitation of their rapturously received Is This It?, prompting shrugs all round. Was that it? The Sex Pistols had the right idea - just implode if you can't keep your nerve.

Franz Ferdinand, Scotland's most acclaimed band in years, are facing up to that challenge right now. In a matter of months, they will release the sweatily anticipated follow-up to their chartbusting, Mercury Music Prize-winning debut. But if the band are supposed to be caving in under the mountain of pressure, no-one has informed singer Alex Kapranos.
