I'm off to London soon. I think I'll go see what Kevin Spacey's putting on at the Old Vic, maybe catch a glimpse of the great man himself. Oh, I can't. There are no shows at the theatre until autumn! What's going on?

A lot of people have been asking the same thing. The Old Vic will go dark for five months after today, when its current production, Arthur Miller's Resurrection Blues, closes a week earlier than planned, following a run of poor reviews and disappointing audience figures. It's just the latest show under Spacey's directorship to get a roasting from theatre critics, who have accused his programme of being dull and American-centric. Now that all the theatre's plans for spring and summer have apparently fallen through, he's been accused of mismanagement too.
