THE recent against-the-odds reversal of fortune for the terminally mediocre Embrace has been of some service to fellow beige sorts Athlete. Not only has it demonstrated that there is still a considerable market for I-can't-believe-it's-not-Coldplay indie plodding, it also means that there will always be a more warranted whipping boy. But still, this underwhelming second album really isn't good enough. In a mixed blessing, Athlete's annoying quirks have been ironed out. New single Wires has been genetically modified to ensure it is an enormous hit, and almost everything else here is a reprise of the same swelling ballad formula.
