THE end, when it came at about 12.35pm yesterday, was apparently very peaceful. Dr Anne Turner had fallen asleep within five minutes of taking the cocktail of barbiturates. Her breathing slowed and half an hour later, she slipped quietly away.

Dr Turner had taken a conscious decision to end her own life. Suffering from the rare and incurable brain disease progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), she had come to the conclusion that she did not want to fade away in the same way that her husband Jack had done. She had tried to kill herself once before, and failed, and this time she wanted to make no mistake.
