Chinese Whispers May Soon Be Louder in Class

CHINESE language qualifications could be available to Scottish pupils as early as August 2007, The Scotsman has learned. Following the decision by an English independent school - Brighton College in East Sussex - to make Mandarin lessons compulsory, the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is reviewing the provision of official Chinese language courses.

At present there are no SQA-examined courses in Mandarin - the most widely spoken of the Chinese languages - in Scotland. The only schools that offer certified training - including St George's School for Girls in Edinburgh and Hillhead High School in Glasgow - do so under the English system of GCSEs and A-levels, and no Edinburgh City Council schools offer Chinese as part of their core language education.
