IN THE late 1960s and early 1970s, in what was almost certainly the most profligate decade for motoring emissions, American car- makers produced millions of muscle cars built for high performance but priced to attract the growing legions of baby boomers who, once the sun had gone down, took them out onto the streets and drag- raced them away from the lights until they literally fell apart.

Though most of the more outrageous claims for brake horsepower were ambitious to say the least, the muscle-car era and its key goal of being fastest over the standing quarter-mile triggered an unprecedented power race among the major car makers in Detroit.
