AT 10:45PM Matthew, a middle-aged office worker from Edinburgh, said goodnight to his wife. When she woke up at 7am the following morning, he had blown GBP 24,000 on six credit cards after an ill- starred night of internet gambling. Shuttered away in his study, he chased his losses in hand after hand of poker and spins of the digital roulette wheel. He never once caught up.

Today, Matthew is struggling to pay off his debts after failing to resist the allure of the UK's fastest-growing "leisure pursuit", internet gambling. He is not alone. There are an estimated 30,000 compulsive gamblers in Scotland, many of whom are seduced by the easy access of 24-hour gaming.
