IMAGINE a clock on your wall that shows not only the time, but the whereabouts of members of your family. This describes the whereabouts clock, an invention from Microsoft Research in Cambridge. As Richard Harper, senior researcher at Microsoft Research, explains, the clock is not so much a product at this stage as a "concept idea", much like a concept car at a motor show.

"The basic idea is to explore how the world at large can be understood, seen and related to in a way that makes the fact that the PC is processing a whole bunch of data completely immaterial," he says.
