Scottish Clubs Give Some Hope Ahead of Autumn Tests

GLASGOW will have played the Ospreys by the time you read this, but Edinburgh's demanding and potentially fascinating match with Leinster isn't till early this evening. So one can write about it without running the risk of seeming idiotic - though that may come later depending on how it goes. It is a big weekend for the two Scottish clubs, Glasgow having stumbled last week down in Wales, Edinburgh hoping to extend their run of nine consecutive wins in the Magners League.

Leinster come as European champions, and even without Brian O'Driscoll boast a formidable array of talent. However, they have lost the Australian Rocky Elsom who contributed more to their Heineken success than any other individual, even the great O'Driscoll himself. Recruiting our own Nathan Hines has undoubtedly strengthened their front five, but, with Elsom gone, Edinburgh have a good prospect of winning the back-row contest, especially since Roddy Grant, Ally Hogg and Alan MacDonald have all been playing notably well. Young Grant, grandson of the Gala stalwart and former international referee Bob Burrell, has been a revelation so far this season. If he maintains this form, then I would guess that Andy Robinson will select him for at least one of the autumn internationals - and not only because he plays in much the same way as Robinson himself used to do as a member of the outstanding Bath side of his time.
