For Scottish fans who had travelled south, there was little else to shout about. Darren Ritchie (7.71m) failed to beat fellow Brits Chris Tomlinson and Nathan Morgan in a long-jump competition dominated by world No1 Dwight Phillips. While the rest couldn't pass the eight-metre mark, he leapt to 8.35, underlining the difference between the best in the UK and the best in the world. Scots hammer thrower Shirley Webb only managed 60m 55cm, some eight metres below her best, while the crowd were treated to a new stadium record of 69.97m from American Erin Gilreath, and 400m runners Lee McConnell and Carey Marshall couldn't help a GB relay team avoid finishing last, behind two American sides in the last event of the day.

THERE was little cheer for British supporters at the Norwich Union International in Birmingham yesterday with the Olympic Games just a month away.
