A FORTH hovercraft would be the first in Scotland since a service ran on the Clyde 35 years ago. The Caledonian Steam Packet Company, a forerunner of Caledonian MacBrayne, operated one between Largs and Cumbrae for two years from 1970.

The craft carried 65 passengers, but crossings were uncomfortable even in only moderately choppy conditions. The vessel also suffered mechanical problems, failed to make a profit and was sold in 1972 to its manufacturers' American owners.
