The list of England's wins in this year's cricket World Cup is almost comically undistinguished. Canada, Kenya, Ireland and Bangladesh are all variously estimable nations, but, with the possible exception of the Bangladeshis, as cricketing powers they are equivalent to Queen Of The South's status in Scottish football.

Cricket is such an eccentric sport though that it is not unreasonable to say that some of England's best cricket in the tournament so far has been in their defeats against the competition's two best sides, Australia and Sri Lanka. Against the Australians, the partnership of Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen, and the latter's century, put England in a promising position, before the lower order collapsed. Against Sri Lanka that lower order, specifically the ebullient Paul Nixon and an impressive Ravi Bopara came within three runs of rescuing a lost cause and securing a famous victory.
