Summary
THE mellow and mellifluous tones of Dan Maskell, the BBC's chief tennis commentator from 1951 to 1991, were as much a part of the British summers as hosepipe bans and ice cream 99s.
Few could lay claim to better credentials for becoming the nation's "Voice of Tennis". Maskell was born in Fulham in 1908 a drop shot away from Queen's Club, where he began his love affair with the game, first as ball boy then coach and club professional. He was a world professional champion and coached Great Britain's Davis Cup winning team of 1933. In 1929 Maskell moved to the All England Lawn Club at Wimbledon to become their first-ever teaching professional.See the full content of this document
