WALTER Smith will warn his Rangers players that the away-day heroics which took them to the Uefa Cup final in May offer no guarantee they will survive a precariously poised Champions League second qualifying round tie with Kaunas.

The Rangers manager cut a frustrated figure at Ibrox last night as his team toiled to a 0-0 draw with the Lithuanian champions in a first leg as tense as he had predicted. It was a situation from which Rangers went on to win three of their Uefa Cup ties last season, but Smith dismissed the relevance of recent history.
