WHAT does Charles Kennedy stand for? The Liberal Democrat leader has a good reason to avoid being pinned down on the answer - he has a left-leaning party which can only proceed by winning right-wing votes.

It is, in some ways, a happy problem. The Liberal Democrats have gobbled up almost all their target Labour seats - with 55 MPs, they are now at their strongest since the old Liberal party disintegrated in the 1920s. But now, they need to woo Tories.
