Summary


ARE you an Ascot, a Windsor or a Pratt? I'm not trying to be offensive. These are tie knots, and if you have no idea what I'm talking about then you, Sir, may belong to the breed pushing a loved and loathed sartorial species to the brink of extinction.

The tie has been with us since the 1600s, but this week it has got that bastion of old-school English cricket, the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club, founded 1787), in a knot. Sartorial slovenliness has made some club members hot under the collar, because MCC president Mike Brearley (appointed in October) has called for a relaxation of the dress code at historic Lord's cricket ground in London, so that members will not have to wear a tie in the pavilion.
