THIS was not meant to happen, certainly not with the game switched to the supposedly genteel streets of Edinburgh. Real football passion bubbles only in real football cities such as Glasgow, we are often told, which perhaps makes all the more significant the insurrection which became apparent at Easter Road last night just half an hour into a game which subsequently confirmed Scotland as rudderless and devoid of hope.

Those who expected the city of Morningside ladies to provide tea and sympathy were rudely awakened when the tartan footsoldiers, having had time to digest Marcus Allback's 27th minute opener, proved unexpectedly ready to turn hostile. Not even against Norway, when Scotland's World Cup hopes had been all but obliterated, had such coruscating hymns been heard, with David Taylor, the Scottish Football Association's chief executive, finding that the padded seats in the Easter Road directors' box do not ensure a comfortable evening.
