PERHAPS Colin Montgomerie has been persuaded that near- silence is the best option after a throwaway remark offered prior to the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond last week.

In reference to the par-3 eighth hole, which he played 18 times on the morning of his wedding in April and racked up 14 birdies and four pars, the Scot suggested that if he didn't at least make par at a hole he could play in a blindfold then he might as well walk back to the clubhouse there and then.
