THE Johnnie Walker Classic, which starts today in Beijing, is one of five European Tour events being staged in China this season. Since Scotland, the home of golf, can only boast four championships, it's clear the sport which has been likened by the Chinese to "green opium" is proving as addictive in Asia as it is in the rest of the world.
Although there are currently only 200 courses in China, compared to 15,000 in America, the sport's rise in popularity will see another 1,000 completed soon. While the Johnnie Walker is long established in the Far East - a field which includes Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Sergio Garcia, Luke Donald, and Adam Scott is among the strongest of the year so far on the European Tour - next week's BMW Asian Open, the Volvo China Open, the Omega Hong Kong Open and the TCL Classic are other, more recent, events which reflect both a growing Chinese audience for the game and the desire of international businesses to gain a commercial foothold in a country with the world's largest population.See the full content of this document
