CONSUMERS are paying up to GBP 186 more for gas and electricity every year because of lack of competition in France and Germany.

A draft European Commission report yesterday said users were being "sold short" by energy firms because markets in most countries are less liberalised than in Britain and companies are able to influence prices because they also control the generation, distribution and sale of energy.
