THERE may be shrieks of delight, tears of joy or star-spangled hissy fits, but nobody loses at the Oscars. Nominees fretting for the heft of a statuette in their hand at tomorrow night's 78th Academy Awards bash can take some consolation in the fact that, even if they don't win, they will come away with "swag bags" containing dollars 50,000 (GBP 29,000) worth of extravagant freebies.
Part of the burgeoning celebrity product-placement industry, this year's losers' gift bags, handed over after the ceremony, are offering such glittering prizes as a weekend at the fabled MGM Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas - a freebie worth more than dollars 27,000 - a dollars 2,500 diamond watch and diamond-encrusted flip-flops. And to enhance the image, the losers' bags also offer dollars 5,800 of laser eye surgery and thousands of dollars' worth of skincare treatments, acupuncture and personal training sessions.
