WHY do people go into a career in our public services? What do they get out of it? And where do they lose out? (Most obviously, you might think, on money.)

I've been working on a new series of programmes for Radio4, called Servants of the People, which begins today. The idea is to bring together groups of people who are dedicated to serving the rest of us - family doctors, clergy, detectives, university academics - and try to get them to explain the buzz they get out of their jobs, and also the downside of dealing with you and me - members of the public.
