MOST players would welcome a bye midway through a Grand Slam tournament, being confident that reducing their workload by a match could give them an advantage over their opponents. After pulling out of the Halle Open because of fatigue, Federer arrived at Wimbledon short of practice on grass. That was not necessarily a bad thing, as it meant that provided he was able to progress past the first couple of rounds he would be getting more match-fit by the day.
