SENIOR ministers yesterday rallied around Gordon Brown after Hazel Blears became the first Cabinet member to break ranks, accusing the government of a "lamentable failure" to get its message across.

Cabinet heavyweights Jack Straw and Alan Johnson insisted that Mr Brown remained the best man to lead the Labour Party after Ms Blears' comments threatened to undermine his position just as he was again looking politically vulnerable.
