TALK ABOUT BIG SHOES TO fill. Back in 1978, the first ever stage production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbusting musical about the life of Argentina's muchloved first lady, Eva Peron, had no less a talent than Elaine Paige in the title role. Then, in the Oscar-winning 1996 movie version, the mighty Madonna had a crack at playing the feminist icon. And now, in this Bill Kenwright touring production, Evita is played by... wait for it... Louise Dearman (pictured, with Seamus Cullen as Che). No, we hadn't heard of her either, but by all accounts the seasoned West End performer has really made the part her own. When the show stopped off at the Edinburgh Playhouse earlier in the year, The Scotsman's chief theatre critic Joyce McMillan described Dearman's performance as "breathtakingly poised and forceful". She also praised the "powerful freeflowing design by Matthew Wright, gorgeous lighting by Mark Howett, and superb choreography by Bill Deamer".
