AN ARMY commander has been killed in Afghanistan and become Britain's most senior war casualty since the Falklands.

Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, commanding officer of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, was killed on Thursday when his armoured vehicle struck a huge hidden bomb in Helmand province.
