Health Boards Take a Stand On Furtive Smokers

SO IT'S farewell to those sad little huddles of staff and patients (or future patients) outside our infirmaries, enjoying a sly puff. While the Smoking Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005 will banish smoking from "enclosed" public areas throughout the country, NHS Greater Glasgow announced last week that it intends to ban smoking not only from its hospitals, health centres and other healthcare premises, but also from their grounds.

Some other Scottish NHS regions, including Borders, Tayside and Shetland, have already introduced similar restrictions, and others, such as Lothian, are in the process of implementing them, in a battle against the tobacco use which is estimated to kill 13,000 Scots every year.
