Health: Lose Weight While You Sleep

Summary

If hitting the treadmill in an effort to lose weight sounds too much like hard work, the Hibernation Diet could be the eating plan for you. Devised by Edinburgh-based sports nutritionist Mike McInnes, the book encourages us to ease up on exercise and, based on the notion that the body burns more fat through sleeping than by working out, tells us how to lose weight while we sleep.

"The diet is based on the basic biology of the liver," explains Maggie Stanfield, the co-author of the book. "Your liver provides glycogen that fuels the brain and it normally has enough stored to keep it well fed for about four hours. By eating a spoonful of honey at night (the food that the body can most easily convert into glycogen) you can keep your brain happier for longer. By keeping your brain well fed the pituitary gland is free to release its recovery hormones (which do the body's overnight repair work) and these burn up fat. However, if your liver is not well fed, your brain goes into starvation mode and, instead of releasing these hormones which break down the fat it needs to do its job, it will go in search of glucose and break down muscle, tissue and bone in search of it."
