A simple breathing and relaxation technique can reduce respiratory symptoms, irregular breathing and anxiety among asthma patients, researchers at University College London have found. The Papworth method promotes slow nasal inhalation and exhalation, with the aim of reducing the number of rapid shallow breaths people tend to resort to when stressed.
"A lot of those under stress breathe from their upper chest," says Elizabeth Holloway, a physiotherapist and lead author of the study. "We teach people to relax their shoulders and breathe calmly from their tummy.
