AS HEARTS officially opened their football academy at Riccarton yesterday, Craig Levein hailed the facility as vital to the development of his present players and potentially decisive in attracting new signings to the club.

The academy, a partnership with Heriot-Watt University, cost about GBP 6million to construct, with an award of GBP 1m coming from the sportscotland Lottery Fund. It includes six full-sized pitches, two of which are floodlit - one being grass, the other an artificial FieldTurf surface. There is also an indoor astrodome, an outdoor goalkeeper's training area, and a jogging track, as well as a gym, treatment suites, dressing-rooms and offices.
