TWENTY-four hours to go until the due date of our second baby, and the name game is in ferocious full swing. Picture the scene around the kitchen dinner table: you are gathered with a couple of friends and prospective names for a boy and a girl are being etched on an ever-lengthening list. As the level of the Chianti bottle sinks, the creative juices flow and selections become bolder.

A friend, visiting from London, suggests "Ned" for a boy. This is where you learn there is more that divides Scotland and the south east of England than simply EasyJet. It is gently explained to her that 'Ned' has a different connotation in Scotland than something with rosy associations with Thomas Hardy novels. It would be like naming a child "Chav Sheppard", to draw an estuary English comparison.
