UK RETAIL sales have shown signs of improvement this month, but hard-pressed shoppers are spending more on essentials, the CBI said yesterday.

Its distributive trades survey for the first half of June reported a balance of -9 per cent of retailers reporting weaker activity than a year ago - better than expected by economists and an improvement on May's -14 per cent balance.
