IRAQ's government yesterday pleaded with Britain and America not to "cut and run" from the country, even as Margaret Beckett, the Foreign Secretary, conceded that history may judge that the invasion was a disaster.

Amid signs that officials in London and Washington are stepping up efforts to find an exit strategy, Barham Salih, Iraq's deputy prime minister, accused western leaders of "defeatism".
